It's interesting to see how many parallels there are between the symbolism of fish in different cultures. In many ways, the meanings that are associated with fish overlap. There seems to be an overwhelming association between fish and fertility, creation and femininity.
Celtic Beliefs
In the Celtic religion, tattoos of fish designs - most particularly
salmon - are associated with prophecy, wisdom, knowledge and inspiration. Celtics
believed that salmon would eat hazel nuts that came from the well of knowledge.
They believed that this is how salmon became so wise and all-knowing. As a result, salmon were very popular on dinner tables in the Celtic culture. By eating a salmon, it was believed that you were also gaining its knowledge.
Therefore, if you are trying to convey such meanings in art, tattoos of fish designs are an ideal subject. Even if fish are merely depicted in the background, your art will give off many deep and interesting meanings. The same thing is true when it comes to tattoos - fish can convey many intriguing ideas.
Seahorse - Friendliness and generosity are two of the most overarching traits of the seahorse. These little critters are cute, too, which is why they are popularly used in tattoo work. Since they have perpetually erect posture, they are also linked with diligence and perception.
While selecting a fish ink design, keep in mind that every species possesses different traits, and if you plan to convey a particular message through your tattoo do not forget to choose the right fish design for it.
